UNDERSTANDING PURPOSE

"We look at this Son and see the God who cannot be seen. We look at this Son and see God’s original purpose in everything. For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible, rank after rank after rank of angels--everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him.'' (Colossians 1: 15-16 MSG)

God is a God of purpose. We see this in the story of creation from the book of Genesis, how that everything he created was designed for a specific purpose: From the heaven and earth to the light and darkness, morning and night, the firmament in the midst of the water, to the water, land, to every plants and animals etc. Absolutely everything was created by him with a specific purpose and nothing happened by accident.

In the same way, when he formed man, He spelled out precisely his purpose which was for man to have dominion over everything on earth. Even when the first man (Adam) lost dominion because of the fall, it was restored to us in Christ and in him we find our true purpose and God’s original intent for us.

‘‘Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”  So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:26-28 NKJV)

God’s original purpose for creation is still his ultimate intention. That purpose is for man to have dominion over everything on Earth and for God to be expressed and communicated through man to all creation; which we saw been demonstrated in person of Jesus Christ while he walked the face of the earth. It saddens my heart to see many ‘‘Christian’’ in a hurry to evacuate earth and float into some mystical heaven. See, God doesn’t just want us to live or float through life aimlessly without any sense of purpose, but he wants us to live life to the fullest expressing dominion and making manifest the knowledge of his love everywhere.

In understanding purpose we need to have it at the back of our mind that, purpose is not giving birth to the day we were born but before. We're born into purpose and not purpose into us. Purpose is always before a person which is why the most important discovery in life is the discovery of purpose. God took his time to carefully configure our purpose and slim fit us into it in Christ before we even saw the light of the earth. This makes everyone of us unique!

"Before I formed thee in the belly, I knew thee, and before you camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee and ordained (purposed) thee a prophet unto the nations." Jeremiah 1:5.

This brings us to the definition of purpose as the original intent or motivation for something, or as the reason for a thing. Without a clear understanding of purpose time and energy are misused, life becomes an experiment; a long night of toiling with great anticipation to evacuate earth. Knowing God's purpose for us in Christ focuses us on the right priorities; which is to have dominion and influence our immediate world with the knowledge of the kingdom of God.

Friends, God's purpose for your life is revealed in the finished work of Christ. He has worked in your purpose and he'll work it out through you.

Live from rest!
